Buying a used car on the coast has one wrinkle that never appears in the advert: salt. A car that has spent its life parked within a mile of the sea corrodes differently to one that has not, and it does not show in the paint. It shows underneath, on the subframe, the brake pipes and the sills.
We are inland at Kirkham. Everything we take in goes up in the air and gets looked at before it goes out front, and if the sea has told on it, it does not go on our forecourt.
What to check on any seaside car
This applies whoever you buy from, including us. Ask to see:
- The sills and wheel arch lips, from underneath rather than from standing up
- The brake pipes, which pit long before anything else complains
- The boot floor and the spare wheel well, where water sits and nobody looks
- The bottoms of the doors and the tailgate, where paint bubbles first
If a seller will not put a car in the air for you, that is your answer. Ask us to put any of ours on the ramp while you are here. We would rather you looked.
